The limits of music reside ultimately in the
perceptual capacities of the human receptor, just as the scope of physical
science is delimited by the perceptual and conceptual capacities of the
human observer. But the recent history of both disciplines, by bearing
witness to explosive and decisive extensions of these capacities, constrains
us from venturing only into the realm of prediction.
