Lontano is a mosaic of static
sounds, formed out of as many as eighty different instrumental parts (each
string player having individual parts to perform). It is a work in which
the subtle play of colors and the almost imperceptible shift of single
pitches to clusters or other “harmonic” aggregates constitute
the totality
of the “action.” . . . all of this is
organized in
internal patterns—almost geometric in visual design when
notated . . .
