Given the very strong possibility that music
is rooted in our biological structure—as are spoken language and
mathematics—the gestures of music can only proceed authentically
from one direction:
from inside. That is where they get their energy, their power, their immediacy.
The conscious effort to give voice to the vast range of these gestures
becomes the act of composing, and inevitably demands not only freedom of
choice but freedom of combination. . . .
