Preserve the Duration of Tuplet Notes when Copying Music

IWBNI the duration of tuplet notes were preserved when notes of a tuplet are copied.

As it is now, if a given selected partial measure region contains notes of a given tuplet but the selected region does not contain the first note of the tuplet, the duration of the tuplet notes will not be preserved when the selected region is copied.

For example, consider the following sequence of two 2/4 measures:

Suppose the 3rd, 4th and 5th note of the first measure is selected. If this region is copied by selecting the menu item Edit>Copy, selecting the first beat of the second measure, and selecting the menu item Edit>Replace Entries, the result will be as shown in the following figure (Note: There will be an extra 1/8th note added to the second measure in this case.):

Or, if this region is dragged to the first beat of the second measure, the result will be as shown in the following figure (Note: The triplet in the second measure will be incomplete.):

Some would prefer to have the result, in either case, be as shown in the following figure:

Note: In some cases Finale will freeze (i.e. lockup) when tuplets are copied. This may be demonstrated by performing the following steps:

Warning! Save all work before trying these steps. The following steps will cause Finale to freeze or lockup.

  1. Select the menu item File>New>Default Document.
  2. Use the time signature tool to set the time signature of all measures to 2/4.
  3. Enter 2 tuplets of 3 eighths in the time of 2 eighths in the first measure. In the third measure, enter 2 sixteenth notes followed by an eighth note on the first beat. Enter a quarter rest on the second beat of the third measure.

  4. Select the menu item Edit>Select Partial Measures.
  5. Select the 3rd, 4th and 5th note of the first measure.
  6. Select the menu item Edit>Copy.
  7. Select the first beat of the second measure.
  8. Select the menu item Edit>Replace Entries.
After performing step 8, Finale will freeze.
