Make the Default Value of OwnPS be Zero on the Windows Platform

IWBNI the default value of the entry OwnPS in the Settings section of the file Finale.ini were zero. As it is now the default value for this setting is three.

There are many disadvantages with using the current default value of 3 instead of the value 0. These disadvantages are listed in the following table:

When Using "OwnPS=3"
(instead of "OwnPS=0"):
PDF File Size PDF files can be up to 5 to 6 times larger.
Postscript File or PDF Printing Time The time required to print a page to a printer can be up to 5 to 6 times longer.
PDF Creation Time The time required to create a PDF file will be substantially longer.
PDF Display Time The time required to display a page of a PDF file will be much longer.
Staff Line Thickness When displayed in the Adobe Acrobat Reader program, the 5 staff lines of a given staff will usually not all have the same width. (Note: This only occurs in the display and will not be the case in printouts.)
Tie and Slurs Ties and slurs will be jagged in printouts and when displayed in the Adobe Acrobat Reader.
Staff Line Length Staff lines will protrude beyond the right edge of the last barline of a system in printouts and when displayed in the Adobe Acrobat Reader.
Beam Length Beams will protrude beyond the right edge of the rightmost stem of the beam group.

The cause of most of these disadvantages was explained in Suggestion 676.

The only known disadvantage of using "OwnPS=0" is that the thin line of the final barline will be only 1 pixel thick regardless of the value of the Thin Line Thickness text box on the Barlines dialog box. It is assumed that this problem can be easily fixed. Until this problem is fixed, many workarounds are possible that involve the use of a custom barline or a repeat barline used in place of the final barline. Some of these workarounds were described in Suggestion 676.

Note: In the case when there are no truetype fonts used in a given document, it is possible to use the menu item File>Compile Postscript Listing with the default setting "OwnPS=3" to create a postscript file that may be distilled to create a small PDF file that will be nearly identical to that which would be created by printing the document directly to the Acrobat Distiller Printer with "OwnPS=0". Files created in this way will be slightly smaller (by a few percentage points) than those created by printing to the Distiller. And, the final barlines will be correct when using this method. But, there are some disadvantages with using this approach. First, more steps are required to create a PDF file. One must create an intermediate postscript listing file and then operate the Acrobat Distiller to open this file and distill it. Then one must delete the temporary postscript listing. This is not as simple as printing from Finale directly to the Acrobat Distiller Printer. Second, there will be some small imperfections in the resulting PDF. The upper edge of horizontal broken beams may not be perfectly horizontal in all cases, and a group bracket that is a vertical line with curved ears may not be perfectly vertical in all cases. Both imperfections are visible in close-up views in the Adobe Acrobat Reader. The former can be seen on close inspection of the printout while the latter is difficult to perceive in printouts. Note: This method may not be used if the document uses truetype fonts because Distiller errors will occur when creating the PDF file from the compiled postscript listing. Specifically, with Finale 97 and 98 the errors will be of the form "MSTT31* not found", and with Finale 2000 (and 2001) the errors will be "undefined; OffendingCommand: Pscript_Win_Compat". Note: To remove all uses of truetype fonts from a document, one may use the menu item TGTools>Miscellaneous>Font Info of the TGTools third-party plug-in by Tobias Giesen to display the list of fonts for a given document and use the menu item Options>Data Check>Swap One Font For Another to change each truetype font in the list to a postscript font.

Note: To override the default value for the entry OwnPS, one must add this entry to the Settings section of the file Finale.ini as this entry is not created by Finale.

Note: All matters addressed in this suggestion pertain to Finale for the Windows platform.
