Do Not Delete Accidentals in 2nd Bar of a Tied Pair of Bars when Editing 1st Bar
IWBNI in the case when a given pair of consecutive measures is such that there exists a barline-spanning tie from the first measure to the second measure, no courtesy accidentals were automatically deleted from the second measure when the first measure is edited in any way, with the following exception: if a barline-spanning tie from the first measure to the second measure is added or removed, or if the accidental on the first note of a barline-spanning tie is changed (e.g. from a flat to a sharp), and such an edit is made by using the simple entry tool, or the speedy entry tool with the option Speedy>Check Accidentals selected, then accidentals may be modified in the second bar for all notes for which the pitch is in the same pitch class as the first note of the tie.
Note: Here, for a given pair of consecutive measures, a "barline-spanning tie" means a tie that starts at one of the notes in the first measure and ends at one of the notes in the second measure.
As it is now, in many cases, all courtesy accidentals are removed from the second measure when the first measure of a tied pair of measures is edited. For example, suppose the measures shown in the following figure have been entered:
In this case, the speedy entry tool has been used to specify that the two courtesy natural signs in the second measure should be displayed. This has been done by pressing the * key with the insertion bar of the speedy entry editing frame on each of these notes. When this is done, the Accidental checkbox on the Edit Frame dialog box becomes selected for each of these notes. The following operations cause these natural signs to disappear:
Special Tools: Use any special tool to modify some element of the first measure and then press Ctrl+D to redraw the screen. For example, use the broken beam special tool to change the direction of one of the broken beams in the beam group that begins at the second beat of the first measure, or use the secondary beam break tool to break the secondary beam between the second and third notes of the beam group that begins at the third beat of the first measure, or use the beam angle tool to change the angle of the beam of the first beam group of the first measure.
Speedy Entry: Select the speedy entry tool. Uncheck the menu item Speedy>Check Accidentals. Click the first measure to open the speedy entry editing frame. Then, press the Esc key to exit the speedy entry editing frame. Or, click the first measure to open the speedy entry editing frame and press the + key with the insertion bar positioned on the first note of the first measure to change this note from F to F#. Then, press the Esc key to exit the speedy entry editing frame.
Simple Entry: Select the simple entry tool and press the 16th Note button on the Simple Entry Palette. Then, click below the first note of the first measure to add a middle C below the existing F. Press Ctrl+D to redraw the screen.
Note: The example given here involves courtesy natural signs. Courtesy sharps and flats that are specified to be displayed, for example when one follows the convention that a sharp or flat should be placed in front of each altered note, would also be removed by these operations.
