An Option to Position a Tuplet Relative to the Staff
IWBNI there were an option to specify that a given tuplet marking should be positioned at a given distance from the top or bottom line of the staff. When this option is selected, the vertical position of the tuplet marking would be independent of the vertical position of the notes and rests in the tuplet group.
This would be useful for engravers who prefer to place all tuplet markings outside of the staff, or for those who prefer to place tuplet brackets outside of the staff in the case when a tuplet spans a group of notes or rests that are not beamed, or for those who prefer to position the horizontal segment of all horizontal tuplet brackets that are placed outside of the staff to be some multiple of a fixed fraction of a space (e.g. 1/4 space) away from the staff.
This could be implemented by adding a list box called Relative To to the Position section of the Default Tuplet Visual Definition and Tuplet Definition dialog boxes. This list box would contain the following items:
DefaultWhen the item Default is selected for a given tuplet, the tuplet would be positioned as in the current version of Finale. When Top Staff Line (Bottom Staff Line) is selected, the vertical position V specified for Number would be measured from the top (bottom) staff line. In all cases, the vertical position V for Shape would be measured from the baseline of the number (as it is in the current version of Finale).
