A Speedy Entry Mode for Changing the Pitches of a Phrase Quickly
IWBNI there were a mode in speedy entry that could be used to quickly
change the pitches of the notes in a given phrase while preserving all
other attributes of the notes (e.g. duration and MIDI velocity), rests,
and any attached items (e.g. ties, articulations and smart shapes).
The could be implemented by adding a menu item called Pitch Replacement
Mode to the Speedy menu. This mode could be selected for use
with any of the following input methods: step-time entry with MIDI, hands-free
entry with MIDI, and step-time entry without MIDI. This mode would have
the following effect:
-
Step-Time Entry with MIDI:
The insertion bar would be manually positioned at a given note.
When a key or chord of keys are pressed on the MIDI keyboard, the pitches
played would replace those at which the insertion bar is positioned. Then,
the insertion bar would be automatically advanced past any rests that follow
to the next note or chord in the score, at which time more keys could be
played on the MIDI keyboard.
-
Hands-Free Entry with MIDI:
The behavior in hands-free MIDI entry mode which is activated by
pressing Caps Lock would be identical to that of step-time entry with MIDI.
It would not be necessary to press a numeric key prior to pressing keys
on the MIDI keyboard as is usually the case with the hands-free entry mode.
-
Step-Time Entry Without MIDI:
The insertion bar would be manually positioned at a given note.
The vertical position of the insertion bar would be manually positioned
using normal mechanisms at the pitch that is to replace the existing pitch.
For example, this could be done by pressing the appropriate letter key.
Then if the new pitch is to be sharp, flat, natural, double sharp or double
flat, the appropriate combination of the keys "+", "-" and "*" could be
pressed. For example, to have the new pitch be a double flat, the minus
key could be pressed twice. Then the Enter key could be pressed to cause
the new pitch to appear at the selected vertical position with the specified
accidentals. All original pitches at this note would be automatically deleted
and the insertion bar would be automatically advanced to the next note
that occurs after any rests that may follow.
