IWBNI the process of saving a given document were instantaneous in the case when the document has not been changed since it has been opened or last saved. As it is now, the time required to save a given document is independent of whether or not the document has been changed. The time required to save a large document can be greater than 5 seconds.

This could be implemented by disabling the menu item Save on the File menu in the case when the current document has not been changed. And, in this case the response to the command Ctrl/Cmd-S could be instantaneous.
