Allow Accidentals to Overlap Preceding Notes and Dots on Large Intervals
IWBNI it were possible to specify that accidentals should be allowed to overlap preceding notes and dots on large intervals.
For example, the following measure has been spaced without overlap:
The following figure shows the same measure with accidentals overlapping preceding notes:
This could be implemented by adding a button called Accidental Overlap to the Music Spacing Options dialog box. This button would display a new dialog box called Accidental Overlap that could contain the following controls:
------------------------------
Accidental Overlap
Melodic Interval Direction | Stem Direction | Minimum Interval for Overlap | Maximum Overlap (EVPUs) | |
First Note | Second Note | |||
Up | Up Stem | Up Stem | none | 0 |
Up | Up Stem | Down Stem | none | 0 |
Up | Down Stem | Up Stem | 6th | 9 |
Up | Down Stem | Down Stem | 6th | 6 |
Down | Up Stem | Up Stem | 6th | 6 |
Down | Up Stem | Down Stem | 6th | 9 |
Down | Down Stem | Up Stem | 6th | 3 |
Down | Down Stem | Down Stem | 6th | 3 |
------------------------------
The black entries in the table are associated with cases for which overlap would not be allowed. The third row of the table specifies that in the case when a down-stemmed note is followed by a higher up-stemmed note, the left edge of any accidentals on the second note may be positioned up to 9 EVPUs before the right edge of the first note.
