Silent Notes
IWBNI it were possible to specify that a given note should be silent
during playback. As it is now, this is not possible.
With this feature one could perform all of the following operations:
-
Attach any of the following types of smart shapes to a rest: slurs, dashed
curves, glissandos, bends and tab slides.
-
Use the Stem Connections dialog box to specify the length and position
of stemlets that are to be used for a given rest.
-
Change the horizontal position of a given rest without changing the horizontal
position of its stem by using the note position special tool.
-
Change the shape of a given rest by using the note shape special tool.
-
Change the shape of all rests on a staff by using the Notehead Font
option on the Staff Attributes dialog box.
To accomplish these tasks, one could create a note that looks and sounds
like a rest by doing the following:
1. Create a note.
2. Set the MIDI velocity of the note to zero.
3. Use the note shape special tool to change the note to the corresponding
rest.
4. Use the custom stem special tool as needed to hide the stem with
a blank stem.
This feature could be implemented by making a given note be silent in any
or all of the following situations:
-
The MIDI tool is used to set the MIDI velocity of the note to zero.
-
The Playback Options for an expression that is attached to the note
are:
Type: Key Velocity
Effect: Set Value to 0
-
The Playback Effect for an articulation that is attached to the
note is:
Change Velocity
Top Note Value: -9999
Bottom Note Value: -9999
Also, such silent notes would be silent in any MIDI files created by Finale.
