A "tuplet" consists of n1 notes of a given indicated duration di that are played in the time of n2 notes of a given duration d2. In its most general form, a tuplet may be notated as n1di:n2d2. The actual duration da of the notes of a tuplet is (n2/n1)d2. For example, for a tuplet that consists of 3 eighth notes played in the time of 1 quarter note: n1 = 3, di = eighth note, n2 = 1, d2 = quarter note and da = (1/3)quarter note.
An "incomplete tuplet" consists of the first n notes of a tuplet n1di:n2d2 where n<n1. For example, 1 of 3 eighth notes played in the time of 2 is a incomplete tuplet.
IWBNI it were possible to easily create incomplete tuplets that play correctly and are spaced correctly.
To implement this feature, the following option could be added to the Tuplet Definition dialog box:
[ ] Incomplete Tuplet: ___of
When Incomplete Tuplet is checked, the edit box would be used to enter the number of notes in the incomplete tuplet. For the example given above, one would enter "3 eighths in the space of 2 eighths" at the top of the Tuplet Definition dialog box. Then one would check Incomplete Tuplet and enter "1" in the edit box to specify that the incomplete tuplet is "1" of 3 eighths in the space of 2 eighths.
