Suppose that a tie connects a pair of notes that have been altered by an accidental and that this tie is broken across a system break. Many follow the convention that an accidental, or at least a parenthesized accidental, should precede the second note of the pair at the beginning of the new system.
Since there is usually a limited amount of space, one often sees the tie that precedes this cautionary accidental positioned by using an outer placement when the inner placement is used throughout the score in most other cases. IWBNI there were an option to specify that the outer tie placement should automatically be used in this case.
