The unit of one staff space is often used as a measure to position and space objects relative to one another. For example, articulations, slide lines and beams are often positioned this way. IWBNI it were possible to constrain the motion of an object to be horizontal or vertical by multiples of a specified amount such as a staff space, half staff space or quarter staff space.
This could be implemented in the Movable Items dialog box by replacing the current checkbox Automatically Constrain Dragging with the following:
[ ] Automatically Constrain Dragging to Vertical and Horizontal
(press Shift to temporarily disable)
[ ] Automatically Constrain Dragging to a Grid of ___ |units|The Ctrl key could be used to temporarily negate the setting of the second checkbox which would be analogous to the functionality of the Shift key for constraining dragging to be horizontal or vertical.
(press Ctrl to temporarily disable)
Note: This implementation proposal conflicts with existing functionality as the Ctrl key is currently used to modify the behavior when dragging a smart shape slur.
