The first piece of the suite opens with two short themes. All musical material for the entire suite is derived from various transformations of these themes. Each transformed theme yields a melodic phrase. These phrases are presented in sequence. Some phrases are connected to their neighbors through pivot tones while others (such as the opening two themes in bars 1 through 3) are not.
